Toyota and BMW's joint sports car project has been the talk of the town for over a year, with many hoping it would result in a brand-new, next-generation Supra model. The unveiling of the Toyota FT-1 concept at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show lead car enthusiasts to believe a Supra was indeed on the way, and unlike previous versions, it would come outfitted with a hybrid powertrain. However, new reports are beginning to circulate that a hybrid model isn't in the works at all and that an inline six-cylinder turbo engine-equipped sports car could be more likely.

Car and Driver is the latest publication to releases rumored information about Toyota and BMW's upcoming car. According to their source from Germany, none of Toyota and BMW's models are currently slated to feature a hybrid powertrain. An inline six-cylinder turbo engine supplied by BMW is believed to be the go-to powertrain for the sports car. In the past, Toyota designers have been quoted saying the joint sports car was designed with the six-cylinder in mind, which adds some legitimacy to this story. But neither automaker has yet come forward to confirm or refute the claims, leaving the possibilities up in the air.

There's no telling what the sports car will be like when it arrives; however, we may know soon if predictions about the car debuting in 2017 as a 2018 model prove to be true. We'll keep you updated along the way and let you know when it hits Arlington.
