The rumors surrounding Toyota reentering the World Rally Championship have finally been confirmed by the automaker's president and CEO, Akio Toyoda. Following a recent race at Rally Finland, Toyoda spoke about the company's plans to return to WRC for the 2017 season, noting Toyota's fans and their love of the brand's history in the series as the main reason why he decided to green light the initiative.
Over the past year, Toyota has been scene testing a Yaris in Germany that many believed to be a future rally car. These hunches have proved correct and the brand has revealed that they will continue to test the car for the next two years until the start of the 2017 season. The current model comes with a 1.6L four-cylinder engine; however, this could change before the car enters its first race. With Toyota's incredible rallying history, which includes winning seven titles in a matter of 10 years, what we do know is that the Yaris is sure to be a showstopper by the time 2017 rolls around and we can't wait to see it take on the World Rally Championship as if Toyota never left.
