Word on the street is that Toyota is currently developing an open-wheel sports car concept that is set to be revealed later this year at the Tokyo Motor Show. The futuristic vehicle is rumored to be a three-seater, come equipped with a hybrid powertrain and feature slight similarities to the Mazda MX-5 Miata.
Australia's Motoring website is the most-recent automotive source to drop details about Toyota's possible open-wheel sports car concept. According to the site, the rear-wheel-drive vehicle is expected to arrive with a 1.5L four-cylinder hybrid powertrain, outputting 100 horsepower, and a continuously variable transmission. It will also be made of carbon fiber, have a central driving position and sport a narrow nose, which will contain the hybrid engine.
Toyota is no stranger to building open-wheel concepts, having previously developed the Motor Triathlon Race Car, which the company debuted in 2004. Nothing ever came of the vehicle at the time, but due to advancements in technology over the past 11 years, Toyota could indeed have a follow-up vehicle in the works that could make it into production. With the recent announcement of Toyota's new partnership with Mazda, it’s also likely that the concept could take some design cues from the Mazda MX-5 Miata; however, as of now, we're still waiting for Toyota to confirm the vehicle is currently in development. We're keeping our fingers crossed for a statement in the coming weeks.
