What's New With the 2019 Toyota Sienna?

The 2019 model year finds the Toyota Sienna nearing the end of its third production cycle. For this model year, Toyota extends the option of an all-wheel-drive system-which makes the Sienna unique among minivans-to the SE, which joins the LE, XLE, and Limited, and leaves behind the base-level L trim. However, Amazon Alexa connectivity and Apple CarPlay are now standard on all trims.

Trims and Features

The 2019 Toyota Sienna has three rows of seats. However, on the base-level L and the top-level Limited, there's a pair of removable captain's seats in the second row to keep maximum occupancy at seven people, while you have the choice of getting a second-row bench-style seat on the LE, SE, and XLE to extend it to eight. On the seven-seater LE and XLE, you can get the Auto Access Seat, which is the automotive industry's only power-rotating lift-up seat to be factory-installed by a major auto manufacturer. The Auto Access Seat rotates 90 degrees, then extends from the Sienna and lowers to a convenient transfer height. As a result, entering and exiting the vehicle is so much easier.

For comfort and convenience, the Sienna starts with features such as tri-zone automatic climate control, remote keyless access, a 4.2-inch color TFT multi-information display, Bluetooth connectivity, Siri Eyes Free, six-speaker audio, AM/FM radio, an audio jack and USB port for connecting mobile devices, five USB charging-only ports, the Scout GPS Link app for navigation, and the Entune 3.0 multimedia system anchored by a 7-inch touchscreen. The LE is enhanced with an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a garage-door opener, HD Radio, a CD player, a three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot from Verizon for up to 2 GB within six months, and a three-year subscription to Safety Connect for emergency assistance.

At the XLE trim level is a smart key access system with push-button engine ignition (an upgrade of remote keyless entry). And the Limited is unique with its driver PA system (Driver Easy Speak) and the Dynamic Navigation and App Suite (in place of Scout GPS Link) with a six-month trial of Destination Assist Connect.

Horsepower

Powering the 2019 Toyota Sienna is a 3.5-liter V6 with 296 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque, which is tied to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Accompanying the powertrain with the standard front-wheel drivetrain provides a fuel economy of 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. The all-wheel drivetrain improves traction ability at the expense of reducing fuel economy to 18 mpg and 24 mpg, respectively.

Safety

Most of the 2019 Sienna's standard safety features are bundled into two packages: Star Safety System, which consists of electronic vehicle stability and traction control, anti-lock braking, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, and smart stop technology; and Toyota Safety Sense P, which combines a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, dynamic radar cruise control, and automatic high beams. Other standard safety features include a rearview camera, daytime running lamps (DRLs), hill start assist control, and seven airbags. Upgrade to at least the SE to replace the halogen bulbs with longer-lasting and brighter LEDs on the DRLs. The XLE and Limited get an alarm added to the theft-deterrent system, as well as a blind-spot monitor system with rear cross-traffic alert. And only the Limited gets a front and rear parking assist sonar system.
