The Toyota 4Runner has historically earned a reputation as a rugged and durable SUV with plenty of off-road capabilities. This year, it retains its off-road performance features while adding more for passengers to enjoy. The interior is the focus of Toyota's updates for the latest model year, with some changes across the board and others that vary by trim.
Now, drivers and passengers can enjoy more standard safety technology through the Toyota Safety Sense package that comes with a pedestrian alert, lane-departure warning, cruise control, and other handy driver-assist tools. The 4Runner's infotainment is refreshed this year to include an intuitive, attractive, and user-friendly color touchscreen display. Now, you'll get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as part of the standard package.
The back row in all trims now comes standard with USB charging ports for convenience. Along with these changes across the board, you'll find variation among the trims' amenities across the lineup as well.
This year, the Toyota 4Runner is available in a wide selection of appealing trims. Even the base model, which is the SR5, comes fully loaded with a variety of standard features. The SR5 gets an eight-inch infotainment display with Amazon Alexa, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay compatibility. The base trim also comes standard with Toyota's premier Safety Sense P package of driver-assist safety technologies. Along with the now-standard USB charging ports in the back row, this trim gets a 120V power outlet in the cargo area.
The exterior gets a unique look with skid plates, fog lights, and smoky projector-style headlights. The SR5 Premium gets heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals. A premium audio system is standard. The next trim is the TRD Off-Road. It gets unique "TRD Off-Road" badges, a locking rear differential, and silver-accented bumpers. The TRD Off-Road Premium adds trim-specific lettering to the interior for a distinctive all-around appearance.
The Venture Special Edition gets metallic gray wheels, a cargo basket, black bumpers, and a black rear spoiler. The Limited gets larger 20-inch wheels with leather seats, a moonroof, and a smart key entry. A push-button start comes standard as well. The Nightshade Edition gets roof rails, black door handles, and black side rocker panels for a distinct look. It also upgrades to a 15-speaker sound system with a subwoofer and amplifier. The TRD Pro gets trim-specific front springs and FOX shocks. Custom "TRD Pro" badges grace the floor mats and gear shift knob.
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner has one engine across the board. This engine is a V6 with four cylinders. At 270 HP and 278 LB-FT of torque, it has plenty of power for on-road driving, off-road driving, and towing up to 5,000 pounds. The engine comes with a five-speed transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard at the base level, while part-time to full-time four-wheel drive is standard as you progress in trim level.
This year's Toyota 4Runner comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense P package that has forward collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, cruise control, automatic high beam assist, and pedestrian detection. Other safety features are standard or available based on trim.
