Since Toyota and BMW first decided to build a sports car back in 2012, auto enthusiasts have been going crazy trying to figure out what the two leading carmakers would develop. There has been very little information about the potential vehicle over the last few years, but just recently we received news that both companies will make a final decision regarding the future of the project by the end of 2015.
In a recent interview with Automotive News Europe, a Toyota spokesperson confirmed that Toyota and BMW would decide if they're going to make the sports car before the beginning of 2016. He revealed that the project has been progressing nicely, but neither company has officially agreed to green-light development of the joint vehicle.
Within the past year, many rumors have been circulating about the car and what it will feature. Various sources have claimed the model will debut as the next-generation Toyota Supra based off the FT-1 Concept and come equipped with a hybrid powertrain featuring lithium-ion air batteries, while others said it would sport an inline six-cylinder turbo engine. It has also been said that both automakers will receive a version of the vehicle, with BMW's arriving as a replacement for the Z4.
No official announcement has been made about the vehicle by either company, but that will change come the end of 2015. We look forward to finding out what's in store for the project and hope to see the sports car make its way into production.
