Toyota is deeply committed to safeguarding the environment's health, an endeavor that goes well beyond the mere electrification of its vehicle range. The adverse impact of automotive batteries on the environment due to improper disposal is well-known. Unfortunately, many of these batteries end up in landfills, exacerbating the pollution crisis. Moreover, the valuable materials within these end-of-life batteries could be salvaged and repurposed. To address this, Toyota has formed a partnership with Cirba Solutions, a company boasting over 60 years of battery recycling expertise. Cirba Solutions offers comprehensive services, ranging from the collection of old batteries to the extraction of essential elements.
This collaboration between Toyota Motor North America and Cirba Solutions expands the automakerās battery recycling network across BEVs, PHEVs, and HEVs. With Cirba Solutions achieving a remarkable 95% recovery rate for crucial element extraction, this partnership not only reduces costs for Toyota but also aligns the company closer to its objective of a closed-loop system for battery recycling. Notably, Cirba Solutions recently received a substantial grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to enhance its facility in Lancaster, Ohio. This upgraded facility will focus on extracting battery-grade materials from end-of-life batteries, reintegrating them into the supply chain for future use in EVs.
