What's New for the 2019 Toyota Highlander?

The crossover's most popular feature, a reconfigurable interior with a massive cargo space protected from the elements, never looked better than in the 2019 Toyota Highlander. Not only is there lots of room, there's lots of luxuries to liven up any trip. Here's a few of the details.

Which Trims and Features are Available for 2019?

Depending on the selection, the eight versions of the 2019 Highlander, LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, and Limited, along with the hybrid LE, XLE, and Limited, can hold either 7 or 8 passengers. In either case, individual passengers won't be held very tightly. Forward riders get 40.7 inches above and 44.2 inches below, second tier occupants have 39.9 inches overhead and 38.4 inches for legs, and third-row commuters receive 35.9 inches above and 27.7 inches of legroom.

The plentiful 13.8 cubic feet devoted to freight swells to 42.3 cubic feet with the third row folded down but explodes to 83.7 cubic feet with the second row out of the way. It keeps getting better with 6-speaker AM/FM/CD sound, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, a pair of 12-volt outlets, 5 USB ports, air conditioning, and manually-adjustable front seats just in the LE edition alone. The LE-Plus rolls out more with an 8-inch touchscreen, three climate control zones, HD radio, and a motorized adjustable driver's seat.

With the XLE, the driver gets 12 seat positions while the front passenger has 4 automated seating positions and heat is circulated through both. A 120-volt AC outlet also joins the lineup, and a moonroof provides illumination on leather trim. The SE distinguishes itself through unique styling such as black leather and second-tier captain's chairs with side table. At the top of the list, the Limited supplies sound through 10 speakers including a subwoofer while cooling down the front seats.

What's the Performance of the Highlander?

2019 Toyota Highlander FrontThe 2019 Highlander comes with a choice of three power plants united by their ability to save money. The basic 2.7-liter straight-4 option saves money by being inexpensive at initial purchase. Creating 185 horsepower, this block combines with a 6-speed automatic transmission to furnish 20 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. Drivers wanting faster acceleration and brawny pulling capacity have a 3.5-liter V6 to achieve their goals with 295 horsepower. Assisted by an 8-speed automatic transmission, this block has an estimated 21 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.

Bigger fuel savings comes with a bigger supply of muscle in the hybrid option that unites the V6 with two electric motors, one front and one back, to fire off 306 horsepower altogether. Working with a continuously variable transmission, it reaches an estimated 30 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. Given the positions of the electric motors, it's definitely an all-wheel drive arrangement.
