For the 2026 model year, the Toyota Highlander now comes with all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard on every trim. This three-row SUV provides a versatile driving experience, balancing daily comfort with the capability to handle a variety of road conditions. The standard AWD system pairs with a turbocharged engine and automatic transmission to deliver dependable performance.

All-Wheel Drive With Enhancements

The 2026 Highlander’s AWD system is designed to adapt to different road and weather conditions. Drivers can choose from multiple modes to optimize performance: Normal Mode for everyday driving, Eco Mode to improve fuel efficiency, Sport Mode for a more engaging drive, and Snow Mode for added traction on slippery surfaces. For challenging terrain, the Multi-Terrain Select feature offers Rock & Dirt and Mud & Sand settings. Advanced safety and handling technologies, including Vehicle Stability Control, Trailer Sway Control, and Dynamic Torque Vectoring, help enhance grip and cornering stability.

Other Powertrain Highlights

The Highlander is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 265 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission featuring Direct Shift engineering for smooth, precise gear changes. The SUV achieves an estimated 28 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg in the city, running on regular unleaded fuel. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The suspension system includes an independent front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension for a stable and comfortable ride. The XSE trim features a sport-tuned suspension for sharper handling, while a trailing-wishbone design enhances overall chassis performance. An electronic parking brake adds convenience.
