Toyota is the world's largest automobile manufacturer, with a rich history spanning several decades. Let's delve into how Toyota rose to prominence in the automotive industry.

Early History

The Toyota Motor Corporation began as a division of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works in Japan, becoming an independent entity in 1937 under Kiichiro Toyoda's leadership. Initially, the company focused on producing vehicles for the Japanese military during World War II but faced potential closure at the war's end.

Toyota Motor Sales Co.

In 1950, Toyota founded Toyota Motor Sales Co. in Japan. By 1957, it had established Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. in Hollywood, California. The following year, Toyota began selling vehicles in the United States, starting with 287 Toyopet Crown sedans and one Land Cruiser. While the Toyopet vehicles were criticized for being underpowered and overpriced, the Land Cruiser earned a reputation as a durable all-terrain vehicle, remaining Toyota's sole U.S. offering at the time.

Rise in Popularity

In 1965, Toyota introduced the Corona, designed specifically for American drivers. This model tripled the company's sales by 1966. The Corolla, launched in 1968, went on to become the world's best-selling passenger car.

By 1975, Toyota had surpassed Volkswagen as the top import brand in the United States. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, Toyota cemented its status as a leading automotive manufacturer, introducing the luxury Lexus brand in 1987 and starting sales in 1989.

In 1998, Toyota expanded its lineup with the Tundra, its first full-sized pickup truck, and the Prius, the first mass-produced gasoline/electric hybrid vehicle.

The Scion brand was launched in 2003, targeting younger consumers through innovative marketing strategies. Toyota continued to thrive throughout the 2000s and 2010s, with popular models like the Tacoma and the Highlander.
